Doug Brown has over thirty years of senior leadership experience in government, the law, and health care. He currently serves as president of Community Hospitals and chief administrative and legal officer for UMass Memorial Health, having served as a top executive in the system since 2003. UMass Memorial Health is a $3.6 Billion integrated healthcare delivery system in Central Massachusetts with over 15,000 employees. The system includes an academic medical center, three community hospitals, a large physician group practice and numerous related entities. It is the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Medical School.   

In his current role, Brown has a wide range of system responsibilities, including oversight of UMass Memorial’s three community hospitals, its behavioral health provider, and numerous system corporate functions, including legal affairs, governance, compliance, internal audit, government affairs, health policy and public programs, corporate relations and diversity, equity inclusion and belonging.  

Brown has a breadth of experience in both the private sector, where he worked at two large law firms as a trial lawyer, and the public sector, where he served in senior leadership roles in two separate branches of the Massachusetts state government. These roles included service as an Assistant Attorney General, as General Counsel of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, and finally as director of the state Medicaid program in 2003 before coming to UMass Memorial.  

Brown contributes greatly to the advancement of health through his many writings on healthcare innovation and improvement and in service to the field locally and nationally. He was appointed in 2020 as a trustee of the American Hospital Association and as chair of its Regional Policy Board for the New England Region.
