Barbara Strain is the Principal of Barbara Strain Consulting LLC. Strain is an experienced healthcare professional with a proven record of success in assisting providers in reaching value driven strategic goals. By tapping into her experience in value analysis and structure realignment she advises providers in how to streamline complex systems into cohesive structures that create sustainable value.

Previously, Strain was the director of Value Management at the University of Virginia Health System. In that role she directed the Value Management Program which collaborated with executive leadership, physicians, clinicians and suppliers across the care continuum providing the infrastructure to standardize product selection and reduce practice variation. Through the use of data analytics and systems thinking she guided a team of nurses and analysts to consistently achieve year over year savings.

Prior to establishing the Value Management program Strain managed the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory operations at UVA. She also served as chair of the institutional fire safety workgroup and facilitated performance improvement initiatives as a Six Sigma Green Belt.

Strain is a founding member, past president and former region director of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP). She is a member of professional organization committees such as the Association of Healthcare Resource & Materials Managers (AHRMM) and AHVAP. Strain has published articles on such topics as healthcare value management, supply chain, disruptive technology & microbiology and speaks nationally on a variety of topics including value analysis, process improvement, sustainability and safety.
